Production and Transmission Infrastructure Site Selection

Clean Energy

Use Case Description

Information on potential energy resources is closely linked to the local environment and existing infrastructure. A comprehensive understanding of renewable resource availability, from national to local scale, is essential. For example, this includes identifying solar potential at the country level, taking into account specific environmental conditions and geographic location, down to very high-resolution rooftop estimations. Freely available Copernicus satellite data, with its high spatial and temporal resolution, supports this high-level site assessment. Scalable EO-based technology provides valuable site recommendations, which are further reviewed in the context of the general effort required for use case implementation—such as proximity to consumers and existing infrastructure. This is crucial for the deployment of least-cost solutions and the planning of suitable transmission infrastructure.
