Using Big Data to Monitor Population Movement at the Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border
The GDA Fragility, Conflict, and Security consortium collaborated with the ADB, to integrate big data technologies and Earth Observation products into the Insula platform, to analyse population movements along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border following the Taliban’s 2021 takeover.
Description
The GDA Fragility, Conflict, and Security consortium has collaborated with the Asian Development Bank, to integrate big data technologies and Earth Observation (EO) products into CGI’s Insula platform, to analyse population movements along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border following the Taliban’s 2021 takeover. This initiative demonstrates a joint effort to address challenges in fragile and conflict-affected regions and support effective poverty alleviation strategies.
Insula brings together several datasets at a time into a cohesive and actionable framework during crisis situations. The key data sources used include:
- German Aerospace Center (DLR): Settlement extennt data
- e-GEOS: High-resolution monitoring services at key checkpoints
- Janes: Military open-source intelligence (OSINT)
- HENSOLDT Analytics: Social media OSINT
By integrating these datasets, raw data is transformed into a comprehensive, real-time understanding of population movement near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. The incorporation of EO products and diverse data sources into Insula represents a major milestone in harnessing big data to directly benefit citizens.
