Advancing Sustainable Agricultural Production in Ghana with Earth Observation
The GDA Agricultural Consortium partnered with the World Bank to develop Earth Observation tools that enhance climate resilience and support data-driven food security financing in Ghana’s agricultural sector.
Description
The World Bank’s West Africa Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) Phase 2 focuses on strengthening food security and climate resilience across Ghana through sustainable agricultural practices, disaster risk management, and market integration. In collaboration with the GDA Agricultural Consortium’s VITO, a suite of Earth Observation (EO) products was developed to support this effort. These products include crop type mapping for maize and rice, drought monitoring, decadal and long-term climate change projections, seasonal climate forecasts, and crop suitability assessments.
The EO products were integrated into the CLIMTAG platform, providing key stakeholders, including policymakers, financing institutions, and agricultural planners, with data-driven insights to enhance food security preparedness and adaptation strategies. These tools enable more precise targeting of investments and risk management, crucial elements for financing resilient agricultural systems.
Overall, the collaboration between the GDA Agriculture and the World Bank demonstrated the vital role of EO data in supporting sustainable agriculture and food security financing. The integration of these products into regional systems like CLIMTAG marks an important step toward leveraging innovative technologies for climate-smart agricultural development in Ghana and the broader West African region.
