Earth Observation for Coastal Resilience in Madagascar and Comoros

Description

Across the western Indian Ocean, coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and fishing grounds are essential for food security, livelihoods, and climate resilience, but they are under increasing pressure from environmental change and limited availability of reliable local data.

To address this, Earth Observation (EO) was used in Madagascar and Comoros through the GDA Fast EO Co-Financing Facility (FFF), working with the World Bank and national stakeholders to turn satellite data into practical tools for coastal management.

In Madagascar, satellite imagery was used to map mangroves and saltmarshes over time and estimate blue carbon stocks, revealing where ecosystems have been lost or restored and supporting conservation and climate planning. In Comoros, Earth Observation was used to model ocean conditions and map fish habitat suitability for key species, improving understanding of seasonal patterns and supporting more sustainable fisheries management.
