Use Case Description

Enhancing rural development is key to stimulating economic growth and reducing poverty. The emphasis on rural infrastructure development and maintenance is essential for advancing agriculture and, by extension, the overall economy. Unfortunately, in low- and middle-income countries, rural infrastructure has always been inadequate. The situation has worsened since the 1990s, due to a marked decline in investment in rural infrastructure. There is an urgent need for renewed investment in both new rural infrastructure projects and the maintenance of existing facilities, to stimulate economic development and alleviate poverty in these nations. Compiling inventories of current transport networks is a valuable tool for identifying available resources and designing or upgrading new transport corridors. However, a major obstacle is the fact that many low- and middle-income countries do not have an up-to-date inventory of their transport infrastructure.
Major obstacles include the scarcity of information and the limited availability and quality of data, which complicate obtaining a realistic assessment of transport conditions in remote areas.
