Training Resource Description
The impact of disasters on people’s lives and the economy is crucial to society, particularly in developing countries, where mortality and economic losses are disproportionately high and development progress is jeopardised. Natural disasters can affect people all over the world in a variety of ways: Geohazards, such as earthquakes and volcanoes; hydro-meteorological hazards, such as floods, hurricanes, tropical storms, and storm surges; and climatological events, such as droughts, heat waves, and wildfires, to name a few.
There is a need to address the impact of these events not only by responding to incidents, but also by improving prevention and preparedness. Earth observation can help to effectively address the majority of these natural hazards by providing hazard mapping, supporting services for assessing exposure, vulnerability, risk, and reconstruction monitoring.
