EO Capability Benefits

Sediments can pose a significant threat to reservoirs but are often not properly accounted for. Data-driven estimates of sediment transport dynamics help plan future projects and improve sediment management plans for existing dams.

EO Capability Description

Sediment transport can be assessed based on EO-derived sediment concentration in rivers and reservoirs, coupled with discharge data from in-situ stations or hydrological modelling. However, this assessment is only feasible for wider rivers (greater than 50 meters). Accuracy improves significantly if local sediment concentration or discharge data is available.

MR IR SPECTROMETERS

High‑resolution (HR) optical imagers are passive, nadir‑viewing radiometers that measure reflected solar radiation in a limited set of broad spectral bands, using pushbroom or similar designs to build 2‑D images as the satellite moves along its orbit. Hyperspectral instruments, which sample a quasi‑continuous spectrum, are intentionally excluded from this category. Typical spatial resolutions for these systems range from about 10 m to 100 m.
