WACA Resilience Investment Project – Assistance in Modelling Plastic Drift and Accumulation in the Gulf of Guinea

In partnership with the World Bank, the GDA Marine Environment & Blue Economy consortium have employed Earth Observation (EO) services to monitor plastic pollution through modelling techniques that track debris movement from Liberia to the Gulf of Guinea. This initiative aims to inform policy decisions and strengthen local solid waste management capabilities.

Description

The West African Coastal Area (WACA) region faces significant challenges related to marine pollution, in particular plastic waste, which threatens marine ecosystems, public health and the blue economy. In collaboration with the World Bank, the GDA Marine Environment & Blue Economy consortium has implemented Earth Observation (EO) services, to monitor and assess the impacts of plastic pollution along the West African coast. This initiative reveals the path of plastic debris from major rivers in Liberia and its eventual impact on the Gulf of Guinea. This project aims to inform policy decisions and enhance solid waste management efforts in the region while promoting capacity building for local stakeholders.
