Utilising Digital Technologies, Data, and Analytics for Climate Resilience in the Maldives

The Maldives, an atoll nation in the Indian Ocean, is utilising Earth Observation technologies in partnership with the World Bank to monitor coastal vulnerability and enhance climate resilience.

Description

The Maldives, an atoll nation in the Indian Ocean made up of about 1,200 islands, faces major challenges in monitoring coastal vulnerability due to limited land resources and high population densities. Working with the World Bank, the GDA Marine Environment & Blue Economy consortium has utilised Earth Observation (EO) data to assess the impacts of climate change on various sectors tied to the Blue Economy and marine environment. These crucial EO products for the Maldives are designed to support decision-making processes. Among these products is a Digital Terrain Model, which provides vital data for understanding coastal vulnerability and related indices. Users can easily access these EO products through a web application, making informed decision-making more straightforward.
