Using EO to Strengthen Disaster Preparedness in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh
The GDA AID Disaster Resilience activity is using Earth Observation (EO) data to help improve flood and landslide resilience in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh.
Description
The GDA AID Disaster Resilience Activity has supported the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support disaster resilience in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, using Earth Observation (EO) data.
Cox’s Bazar is one of the most climate-impacted areas in the country and is home to the world’s largest refugee camp. Satellite data is helping teams monitor flooding, land movement and environmental change across the region, giving planners and local authorities a clearer picture of where communities and infrastructure are most at risk.
The data is also being used to track changes to wetlands and mangroves, which play an important role in protecting the coastline and reducing flood impacts. In the refugee camps, ground movement monitoring helps identify slopes that may become unstable during heavy rainfall, supporting better preparedness and risk planning.
By combining EO data with local knowledge, the programme is helping guide safer infrastructure investment and improve long-term resilience in Cox’s Bazar.
