The ESA GDA Public Health Activity, in support of the World Bank’s ANRiN 2.0 initiative, is using Earth Observation to map rice production and estimate yields in Nigeria to strengthen early warning and decision-making for food and nutrition security.

Description

Nigeria is facing increasing pressure on its food and nutrition systems due to climate variability, erratic rainfall, and rising temperatures that continue to affect agricultural production. In response, the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria 2.0 (ANRiN 2.0) programme, supported by the World Bank, is working to strengthen early warning and response systems for food and nutrition crises, with support from the ESA GDA Public Health activity.

The project focused on rice production in Kano and Kaduna States, using satellite data to map where rice is grown and estimate yields across the region. These insights provide an up-to-date picture of production patterns and help fill gaps where traditional agricultural data is limited or delayed. By tracking changes over the growing season, the system can also highlight potential shortfalls earlier, supporting more proactive planning and response.

Because it is built on open satellite and climate data, the approach is scalable and can be applied in other regions with different farming systems. It offers a practical way to strengthen food security monitoring, improve coordination between sectors, and support long-term resilience planning in countries facing similar data and climate challenges.
