Urban Wetland and Restoration Monitoring System in Rwanda
The GDA AID Urban Sustainability consortium is helping the World Bank’s Rwanda Urban Development Project (RUDPII) use Earth Observation (EO) technology to monitor and restore urban wetlands in Kigali.
Description
The GDA AID Urban Sustainability consortium is supporting the World Bank’s Second Rwanda Urban Development Project (RUDPII) by using Earth Observation (EO) to develop an Urban Wetland and Restoration Monitoring System that provides national and city authorities with visualisation tools that facilitate evidence-based urban planning in Kigali, Rwanda. GDA Urban Sustainability is working alongside World Bank staff and their counterparts in Rwanda, namely the Rwanda Environmental Management Authority (REMA), the Rwanda Water Board and the CoK. The aim of GDA Urban’s involvement is to provide tools that can give authorities a clearer view of the presence of water at certain locations as well as changes to the wetland habitats in the city over a given period of time. By using EO data, authorities can assess the effectiveness of wetland conservation, which is crucial for mitigating flooding in urban areas. This initiative also supports Rwanda’s broader goal of integrating geospatial data into urban planning and disaster management.
