Satellite-Based Monitoring of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing in Kiribati’s EEZ
The EO4SD Fragility, Conflict and Security consortium partnered with the ADB to explore additional monitoring strategies aimed at reducing Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in Kiribati’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Description
The ESA Earth Observation for Sustainable Development (EO4SD) Fragility, Conflict and Security activity partnered with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to explore additional monitoring strategies aimed at reducing Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in Kiribati’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Using Satellite-based Automatic Identification System (SAT-AIS) data, the consortium tracked vessel activity across three key areas of the EEZ during the last six months of 2019. This analysis provided valuable insights into vessel types and nationalities operating in the region.
The demonstration highlighted how SAT-AIS complements existing vessel monitoring systems and showcased the potential of satellite technology to support Small Island States in strengthening maritime surveillance and managing their marine resources more effectively.
