Description

In Cameroon, where one in four people live below the international poverty line, expanding access to reliable, afordable electricity is vital to reducing poverty. In order to understand where the gaps are in electrification progression, the GDA Clean Energy consortium is working with the World Bank to utilised Earth Observation (EO) and socioeconomic data.

World Settlement Footprint (WSF) data was combined with night-time light data from 2016 to 2022, to show a detailed picture of where electrification has expanded and how settlement patterns have evolved in Cameroon. Trends in the data reveal recent progress in electrification and communities that may still lack reliable energy access. By visualising these trends, EO data provides policymakers with a consistent, verifiable picture of how electrification has progressed over time.
