EO to Combat Water Scarcity in Botswana

The GDA Water Resources consortium, together with the World Bank, is using Earth Observation (EO) to monitor groundwater and flood risks, aiding Botswana’s efforts to improve water management and ensure long-term water security.

Description

The GDA Water Resources consortium, in collaboration with the World Bank is using Earth Observation (EO) data to address water-related issues in Botswana. Botswana faces water scarcity due to its arid landscape, low rainfall and reliance on groundwater, which supplies about 80% of the countries water. To combat these issues GMV experts, as part of the Water Resources consortium, conduct long-term monthly assessments of groundwater status, complemented by a suite of EO-based products, including potential groundwater recharge estimates, groundwater resources assessments at national and catchment/regional scales, and comprehensive flood hazard assessments. In 2024, GMV will further extend its support to the World Bank by providing flood hotspot observations, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of Botswana’s water security landscape.
